I have to complete a job application for an interview today at The Travelers in Hartford, CT.?

This is one of the questions, "Have you been convicted or pled guilty or no contest to any crime or been released from prison in the last seven years? " Need answer ASAP, please
I have a CWOF (continued without a finding) in Massachussetts for Criminal Harassment January 2010. I have to pay a fine(monthly), and have probation every 2 months until January 2011.
Does this also equal "No contest?"
The application asks what the charge is: Harassment, Criminal
Date of Offense: Paperwork Stated: 6/5/2009
Disposition Date: January 7, 2010
Then is asked for the Disposition: CWOF(continued without a finding),
Should I also add "Can Discuss in interview? or instead of CWOF, put CAN DISCUSS IN INTERVIEW?
I'm really stressing out on this. It was a bad time in my life and I'm past that now and have moved on.
Thanks! Additional Details I have to add that this is an electronic application. Link to this application was sent via email. Need to send this before I go this afternoon.

Employers always ask the applicant this question, but they never depend on his answer. If they hire you they will run a background check. If you lied you might be fired.
No, you have NOT been convicted of a crime, or pled guilty or no contest. CWOF is similar to a no contest plea in other states. But it is not a no contest . It is a CWOF. You can and should honesty say no to all except a question that specifically asks about CWOF. And definitely do NOT add anything like "Can be discussed". Here's why:
This is not a subject you want to bring up at an interview. If you tell them about it, you will NOT be valued for your honesty, you will be judged. They will never admit it, but : young + anything that uses the word harassment = possible immature hothead. Plus, you will come off as foolish for offering up unnecessary negative information, another quality they are not looking for .
It's like if they asked you if you've ever been in a bar fight, what would be the smarter answer?
A: "No"
B. "No, but I've kicked some serious a** in the parking lot."
They will only seek a record if they offer you the job. If you start talking about paying fines for a recent harassment anything, you will not get that far.
If they find the CWOF AND it matters to them, you can be sure they will discuss it with you. You don't need to offer. You are not hiding anything, you are simply not telling them more than they asked for.
There is a good chance they will NOT fire you if it's on the background check because they know they didn't ask for that information, are aware of the loophole they are responsible for and don't want to muck around in their own muddy water.
Yes, it will be nerve-wracking to have to wait and see if it's a problem. You will face the same issue any place else you apply. It's just a natural consequence of doing something that was probably more stupid that criminal.
In a nutshell: Never bring up reasons you should not be hired.
Keep it positive, and good luck! |

Job applications are always gruelling - how should you fill them out? Should you follow them up when there is no answer? I guess there's no definitive solution but the site in the box below has some really awesome guidance about this. It really helped me when I was filling in job applications recently, in addition they have alternative info on job searching. |
