I have worked as a stand in team leader continuously for the last 18 months should this now become full time ?

The stand in position was to cover holidays and sickness of the full time team leader BUT the team leader left the company 18 months ago and I have been working in the capacity of team leader since then. Now the company have decided to advertise this position. Due to the length of time I have been working in this position should I be automatically upgraded to a full time team leader under "custom and practice"?

Unless you have a bargaining agreement that states otherwise Team Leader are the exclusive right of the Company to select.
There is no such thing as an "automatic upgrade".
Apply for the position and see what happens.
No laws have been violated by the Company. |

Presumably you've had the opportunity to discuss this with your boss at review meetings over the last eighteen months; what was said?
It seems to me that the company has been taking advantage of your good will, but they aren't doing anything illegal.
Apply for the role anyway, but I'd be inclined to start looking at job ads elsewhere; if you weren't considered ok as a long term jobholder you should have been told 12 months ago. |

There is no automatic upgrade the company have to advertise the position to allow everone the opportunity to apply its called fairness and most companies will advertise internally first.
You need to make an application for the job and do as the other poster states look for another position just in case, as this could go two ways.
They could offer you the position.
They feel that after 18 months you haven't quite got what they feel is necessary to do the role even though you have been doing it for 18 months.
I worked with a lad who applied for a team leader position nine times before he eventually got the position he was convinced that the only reason he was offered it in the end was because they couldn't find anymore excuses to use as to why they hadn't given it to him.
Good Luck |

no your not automatically entitled to an upgrade, although it would be courteous of your company to offer the job to you, they dont have to. you are able to apply like everyone else and if you have 18 months experience, you have a good chance of being successful. To be honest I have seen this happen, when a company arent happy with the person doing the job already, so they advertise it. |

There was a restructuring in my company because of recession and part of that move I was stepped down from my position as a team leader. Lately my company is in need of a team leader and I applied for it and got interviewed. Qualifications and experiences wise I am more suitable for the job and I knew that my manager and supervisor have a candidate for that position. I am scared that I might not get the job because I am not close to my bosses and I am only an immigrant. Do I have the right to contest their decision if ever they will not hire me? |
