Further to the answer given by The Oracle, income-based Job Seekers Allowance (the UK's welfare benefit for the unemployed) can be claimed indefinately, though of course you'll be pressurised to look for work, go on training courses etc.

Some states have extended the unemployment to 8 months instead of 6 months. Check with your local office.

You have Jobseekers's for about 18 months. Then you might be put on New Deal if you have not found a job by then. They leave you alone for about 18 months until they ask you to go on New Deal.
