I just started working with a law firm and I want to quit!?
|
I just started working for a law firm and I hate it! I want to quit just working after a couple of days. everyone is always stressed out, I have no interest in what I am doing, and I am law student so I have to focus on my classes. Should I quit so easily and how should I break it down to my boss?
my boss has even started yelling at me and I was in tears today (nobody saw my about to cry). Additional Details and please let me know if I should give a 2 weeks notice even though I can't stand working there.

I think that you should quit the job. My roomate is also a law student who was working at a firm that was run in the same mannor. He hated working there and it made his life miserable. The "realestate guy" thinks that every job is filled with stressed out and negative people, NOT true. Sure the real world is stressful but you can still find something that you love, IN LAW!!
Back to my roommate, he left that firm and found another firm where he made more money and he really loves it, he talks about it all the time and how stressfree the atmosphere is there.
If you want to leave, then leave. You said you have only been there a week? Well if you give your two weeks notice now you will have only worked for three weeks, not something that your gonna put on your resume anyways. So what is the sense in staying, to please your boss that you hate, and the one that was so mean to you that you cried. The other guy was right thought, if he yelled at you there might have been a reason so take a close look at that. Good luck with your classes and remember you dont need to stay somewhere that makes you unhappy, move on dont settle for that, YOUR BETTER THEN THAT, I bet! |

Sounds kinda like my last gig working for someone else as a lawyer at a law firm. I lasted six unpleasant weeks. I was stressed out, the staff was stressed out, my boss punched a door while I was talking to him because he was stressed out, they buried me in an avalanche of active files, I received a lot of calls from stressed out people needing immediate attention, the firm had all these stupid little rules which were annoying and they would e-mail staff with these dumb e-mails. My boss would snap at me, write me scolding e-mails and cc other people at the firm with the e-mails. I felt like a slave. I was encouraged to work late, uncompensated, and the pay was uninspiring. The young boss who got the firm from a relative was getting rich, but the staff wasn't. I would try to hide in my office so no one would bother me. I turned off on the scene pretty fast, and feel a sense of satisfaction that I escaped the day to day nonsense. I would quit, short and fast, adios amigos, and not look back. |

yes you should quit. maybe you should finish your school so that you can be sure this is what you want to do. maybe you just picked the wrong law firm to work out. when your done your law school, consider opening your own office. that's what my dad does, except he's a cancer doctor and the income comes in like crazy. it's better to work for yourself sometimes. my sister is also at drexel uni and she is going to open her own office too. i'm not sure yet if i want to pursue my career with law or medicine. i can always back up my arguments, but i have a big interest in medicine. good luck with your studies. just keep it up, don't let one boss ruin you. |

I'd suggest not burning any bridges and hand in a two-weeks notice instead of quitting abruptly.
The first attorney I worked for made work miserable for his employees. I've since found much better attorneys to work for, so not every law office is the same. However, do you not enjoy working in law or do you just not enjoy the law office that you work at? The practice of law can be stressful, especially more so if you work in litigation. Since you are a law student, eventually you will end up in a law office, so ask yourself if that's what you want to do. |

Let it be a lesson, for this is the common path your fellow students take. If you don't have to pay the bills with that job, quit for your own peace of mind. However, don't count on a recommendation from them. |

When you feel like you hate your job, it is going to become really stressful on you and your productivity is going to slowly decrease. I honestly think that where ever you work, you need to be totally comfortable. I've learned that its okay to feel that a job may not be right for you and you can move on. If your next employer asks why you didn't stay, just simply say that the position was not a good fit for you. |

The appropriate thing would be to give a two week notice. Life is too short to be miserable where you spend the majority of your days.
Once you decide to leave a job, GO! You do not have to give a reason or explain it to your boss. No one should be berated or yelled at by their superior(s). Simple type a short notice stating when your last day will be, hand it to your boss, tell him the firm is not a good fit for you and you are leaving to pursue other opportunities.
Good luck! |

you are attending law schools, however working at a law firm gave you a glimpse into the stress level, that you find unacceptable. Bad news, most careers or just about any job, heck life itself, is full of stress, you can't escape it. good news, there are several methods of dealing with it, Laughter, relaxing, exercise and just finding your zen (what makes you happy). But you can't run or hide from it, but you must deal with it. Stress is nasty...leave it where it belongs, on the bottom of your shoe
oh yea, we all need a little more sensitivity when it comes to others, and how we communicated |

lets see if I have this right. You are in law school, but don't like working at a law firm.
You say that everyone is stressed out. Welcome to the world. Most places of employment is this way.
If you want to practice law, you need to get a thicker skin.
What did you do to have the boss yell? Learn from it. I really wouldn't quite and I would give it at least 6 months.
If you want to quit and give up, go ahead. But please don't hide your quiting in "I have to focus on classes". This is not the reason.
Remember, what ever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. |

Great place to learn what the law field is really like. Stay and learn or change majors. |

I would quit without even blinking, maybe give them a 48h notice and that's it. I would also forfeit any reference letter I might I have wanted to ask them. I'm not ruining my quality of life anymore for a job; been there, done that for 8 years and now starting over in law school.
I can't stand people who justify yelling at and abusing subordinates. If someone makes a mistake, yeah, that person can or may be yelled at. However, being yelled at for the sake of it or because it's the crowning glory of a profession? Please!!! That kind of boss deserves to be put in is right place of sleazeball unable to control oneself.
I'm a mature law student and I've had a couple of legal internships. I was lucky enough to work under the supervision of very competent and pleasant lawyers. However, I had an internship with a criminal law firm, a small boutique. And the partner, a totally unorganized but nice man who was my age, used to yell at his articling student (who was a few years older than the lawyer and me). And guess what would the articling student do once yelled at, well, turn to me and treat me as good as or worse than she was spoken to. At one point, totally fed up and on the verge to hurl insults at her, I just told her that even I might understand her being stressed out by the lawyer's attitude but I don't appreciate her treating me badly. I stressed on the fact that I was actually helping her by covering her mistakes. She played coy, apologized profusely and life went on.
My point: it doesn't matter the level of stress going around. Before going to law school, I had worked for 8 years with traders. These people are worse than lawyers when it comes to stress management and yelling at everyone around them. I was 22 when I started and I had no problem telling people to f..k off because I hadn't been hired to be disrespected at work. I think that no matter what profession you're in, it's important to set some boundaries and to make your coworkers, even your boss, respect them. And even an intern can say: ENOUGH! Gaining work experiences at such cost isn't worth it. Life is complicated enough as it is without having to put up with people's BS or giving them a power or an importance they shouldn't have in your life. Think about it: if you die tomorrow, do you really think that your boss' world would stop spinning or that he would even shed a tear? If the answer is no, tell him or her to back the hell off and find a healthier work environment. |
