Put it on your resume? Well that's a joke...Anyway, they are not pressing charges, you should be happy about that. It won't affect your interview or be on record but why do you have to steal? Anyhow, if you keep doing it, it will catch up with you real soon! Go find a job and just don't do it again....

Without knowing the particulars or background...

An previous employer is severely limited by what they can inform a prospective employer: They can verify employment, that you worked there under the specified times. They can ask if the employee is eligible for rehire. And that is pretty much it!

That being said, as a HR/Personnel Manager, I do basic background checks frequently. There has been several occasions where the employer offered way more than they should. Given this information, I would not hire you.

Reporting it on your reaume or on an application? NO! On any application, you are going to list as "reason for leaving?", "Conflict of Interest." I don't know the particulars of your situation, so I won't browbeat you, but the least you can say about the incident, the better. If the employer attempts to pursue the entry, you can just say you were terminated over a conflict of interest and you couldn't elaborate regarding the previous employer without it sounding negative. A prospective employer may take this as your attempt at not wanting to come across as a trash-talker. While this may sound rather dubious, you are NOT lying.

As for the self-righteous, arrogant postings here:

If you work in an office and happen to keep the pencil ****** behind your ear, that's stealing.

If you type up personal letters, or use the copy machine for personal use, that is stealing.

If you work in a restaurant/kitchen and you "taste-test", or drink out of the soda fountain and the company has a policy against that, that is stealing.

If you use ANY company tools/equipment for personal use.... you guessed it! Stealing.

But, to the OP, as to the last part of your question: How it will effect your life: the answers here are pretty reflective. Given time, and inflection, you will be able to weather this storm.

Good luck.

Definitely do not put them on your resume. Since they didn't prosecute and obviously did not report the theft to the police there will be no record for any future employers to see if they conduct any background check.

Nearly any firm will not divulge the reason for termination, even if asked, for fear of litigation resulting from possible "black-balling". If it is not a long-term employment, do not use it as a referrence on your resume. If it is, you may ask your superiors what they will say when your next prospective employer calls to ask the dates of employment and whether you are eligible for rehire. If the firm has a decent HR department, the only information they can give is dates of employment. Be advised, however, that sometimes, non-verbal information can be passed to a perceptive enquirer from tonality and voice inflection.

Certainly, you will not have a record if they do not prosecute, however, if there is a future incident, you may not get off quite so freely.

Good luck and stay on the straight and narrow.

shouldnt you have thought about this BEFORE you shoplifted? and yes its going to stay on your record for life and if any other jobs do a background on you its going to show up and more than likely affect you getting hired anywhere else.... but good luck! you'll need it! and on future applications it asks if you have been convicted of a felony in the last so many years.... and be truthful on it... that does help, sometimes.
