I need legal help regarding a starting a coffee shop in a school?

I need help because some friends and I came up with a business plan to start up a coffee shop in the school we go to. It seems as though we made a mistake but i am not educated enough in the legal world to know what it is i could do about it. The school wants 50% of our total profits. They were really nice about it until we got down to the details. What can I do. They mentioned that they need to pay for insurance, electricity, water etc. What do we do about it. How can we possibly argue? Any and all legal help or comments would be extremely appreciated.

If you were going to open a business in the real world, you would have to find a facility for your coffee shop. You would either have to buy it and make mortgage payments or rent it and make rental payments. You would then have to pay for all your utilities including water and electricity. You would have to have a business license, be inspected by the county or city, and pay business taxes.

The fact that your school is asking for a percentage of the profits means that they are asking to become a partner of sorts in your business and will take less money if you make less. If instead they required you to pay for rent and utilities, you would have fixed expenses regardless of whether or not you actually made a profit.

I admire your spirit and wish you luck, but my opinion is that the school is offering you a good deal.

By the way, one way to finesse this a little bit, would be for your friends to pay yourselves an hourly wage whenever you are actually operating the shop, say minimum wage. These expenses would come off the top and you would only have to pay the school have of the profit after your salaries.
