My company is letting go of people and I know that they are slowly going to get to me but I don't know when. In the meantime it's time for me to move on to another job, but first I need some school for a few months. Now, my question is I need unemployment because I need a few bucks to complete a short course. Can you ask to be laid off or is that something you just don't do. Im not sure but I would think in the long run it would even be better for the company since they are barely keeping up with sales.

Dee, I don't think you know what your talking about, my field is selling cars, cars are not selling. That means that unemloyment will help you find a job in that field or they will let you learn a new trade so that you could work in that field. Im not a lazy worker and I have been working as a single mother with no child support for over twenty years. Don't assume Im taking advantage of anything. Im taking care of myself before my job lay's me off when they feel like it at no notice, by the way I have paid into unemployment tenfold. Also, I have never collected. I hope You get caught for being a B.

You can ask, and maybe you have a friendly enough relationship with management that you can be frank, agree on the situation with them, and they will do it. But on the other hand, when former employees collect UI the employer's premiums go up. It is an insurance system after all, and they pay into it. Bringing up the question will indicate that you want to leave and that, if they just wait you out, you will quit and they won't have to fire you and risk the UI claim. |

In order to received unemployment benefits you have to qualify -- looks like if you are laid off that you will qualify -- but it also means that you have to actively look for other employment while receiving benefits. They will check up on you and ask your prospective employers if you are going to the interviews. The longer you are out of work, the smaller your benefits will be.
Also, your benefits will not be equal to your paycheck...it will be less. |

If you "ask to be laid off" or walk out it is considered quitting and many organizations would rather you do this than get fired because you can not claim unemployment from it. (It is volunteering to quit). It gives them the chance to call you back at their own terms, which is not fair to you. If the company terminates your employment, then you can go onto unemployment, but it is only a certain percentage of what you earned, and then for only a limited amount of time. I would continue the job search, but do not quit until you find something more stable. Also, be sure to let them fire you, do not quit on them, that way you can still have an income without the job until you find another job. Chances are, if you are trying your hardest to do your job and you benefit the company, you will not be fired. |

unemployment compensation is paid to the laid off worker who is looking full time for another job. It is not paid to the lazy worker who wants to take advantage of the system and collect it while he or she goes to school. I hope you get caught and have to pay it all back. |
