Find answers to your legal question.

I need to resign, but can i include that it was because i was bullied in the letter??

I am leaving my current company because I was bullied by manager and her superior did not help resolve the issues. HR recognised the bullying, I am sure. I have since been attending councelling, put on anti-depressants, and there is a letter from gastroentrologist to say that my work situation had caused me to flare and he recommended i leave the company. My normal doctor has also had concerns for my health. The boss changed my role without informing me, which suited me at the time, but i understand this could also be construed as constructive dismissal, as well of course, that i am now where i have no choice but to leave. The company is massive. Should i include in the resignation why i am leaving - I am worried it could affect my career long term. I am wondering whether i should get legal advice before i do anything. Does anyone have any advice/experience in this?? Thank you
Additional Details
Thank you for your quick responses. I do want to remain professional - but feel completely unprofessional insofar as how my job performance I feel has suffered. I understand that other people dislike this manager and have left because of her antics. She really brought me to a low level, where I dont want to be vindictive, and leave with my head held high, the same way I walked into the firm - after 7 years with impeccable reviews - been turned into a crumbling mess, it saddens me. She blocked my promotion and that of another colleague because of me, and has since been bad mouthing me. I have (proudly in my mind) never mentioned anything to other team members about this, as I do not want them dragged in, but I know she has. My colleague who does know, only knows as she witnessed the bullying and also holds evidence which I have asked her not to share with me, as she was told things that were bad. I just want to protect the next person, I dont believe I could face legal proceedins

Keep your resignation letter short, to the point, and, if possible, upbeat.

One rule: if at all possible, don't burn bridges. You may wish to use the company as a reference, or possibly even future employment (if the manager leaves). Also, people you have met there (contacts) may help you get a different job down the line. It's a small world.

There are certain situations where the employer does illegal practices. It doesn't sound like it from your question, but if you want an opinion, check a lawyer.

The time to tell your horror story is when (if) you apply for unemployment.

If you feel you were mistreated, you should seek the advice of an attorney before turning in your papers.

I would agree with wartz - don't leave without checking your options. Depending on your state laws, your options may differ as to when/if/how you can sue. Also there my be a big difference in compensation packages.

However, on a general thought - I prefer to be as professional as possible at all times, so if you look for another job, there is no backdoor channel going on about you being unprofessional. Not supposed to happen, but does.

Best of luck to you!

I can understand your desire to strike back at this poor excuse for a manager, but it's unlikely anything you write would significantly change their perceptions of him. Any more than the fact that one of his employees is leaving can affect it (if it's not the first time, that WILL tend to begin changing their perceptions).

Just cut your ties to that outfit and move on to something that better suits your personality. Hopefully you can get off the meds for the long term.

NEVER put something like this in a resignation letter. Keep it short and to the point.,

Rememeber, you can leave with class, or leave like an ***. And NEVER put anything in writing which you might regret later on.

You are leaving for personal reasons and let it go at that.. Who really cares about the rest?
Don't piss anybody off on the way out. It could come back to haunt you.
By the way, you don't want to work for a massive company again. Too much office politics.

You should not include this type of information in a resignation letter to the company. If you have reported all the facts of this situation to your HR department (including the medical information/recommendations) and they have done nothing about it then you need to do what is best for your health. You can go and speak to an attorney, but they will ask you if you reported everything to the HR group (don't assume they recognize or know about it unless you yourself have reported it to them) and did you report it to senior management of the company to see if it could be resolved before you quit.

I think you could seek legal council. If you were being mistreated at your job, and your job didn't do anything to help you after you told HR about it, you could call it involuntary and actually get unemployment.

However, if you are doing this to try and keep the next person from being mistreated, after you submit your report to their HR and they take it in, if the company does not adjust and fix it, file a report with the better buisness burro.
