They can tell the truth, but often an employer - to avoid possible litigation - will only say whether an ex-employee is elegible for rehire.

If they gave you the option to resign or be fired, it seems to me they were saying "see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya" and the file is closed. They are not going to harass you all your life. If a new employer asks they'll probably just say your position was terminated for corporate reasons and leave it at that. Anything more would be libelous at this point since they did not have you arrested at the time. I'd just forget about it and if you can, leave that Company off your resume. They'd like that too!

An employer might allege that you stole someothing, but unless you went to caught, you legally are not guilty of theft (presumption of innocence).

Privacy laws means that it is illegal to gather information about someone without their knowledge or permission. Which means you provide references, they ring only the references. Some times they will ask for a contact number of a company. In which case they will contact human resources to find out if you really worked there or not (confirmation of employment, rather than a reference).

There is always the chance someone will mention that you were a thief and you shouldn't be employed, or they might not.

Relax, get more work experience, over time we all have the opportunity to become better people, but sometimes we need to work hard at it.

Yep, pert neared say what them other guys is a sayin. Cause ya know most of dem dare ex-bosses don't want to be meetin ya in the court room cause you'd be a have a law suit up on dem. Now getcha bottle of brut cologne. Cause it works wonders at job interviews.
I just love this stuff! And the plastic bottle is the ultimate indication of true class! I am the true stud of the trailer park when I wear this, and the visible cartoon-ish stink lines that emanate from me when I go out give me that needed edge to pick up the toothless ladies! It has many other uses as well, such as unclogging drains, flushing groundhogs out of their holes, road flares, gasoline substitute, windshield de-bugger, self-defense, antiseptic, weed killer, and varnish stripper. I also drink it.
