Find answers to your legal question.

I recently hired a coworker who is a male and a guyI worked with him years ago. Now that he's got the job....?

and I am his boss he grinds my nerves with his "Yes mother" or "I'm just messing with ya" comments. He begged me to hire him and I told him only under the condition he does his work. Already he's forgetting things I've asked him to do and has stepped out of bounds. I realize being friends is out of the question - I've got to keep my distance and let him know his annoying humor is cute the first ten times but after that it's getting really old. He's made crude comments in front of me and I want to keep it professional at all costs. How can I make him keep his distance, keep it professional and respect me without coming across as a total you-know-what? When I left early the other day he said "Oh if you get to leave early so do I". This is crap I don't want to deal with. I need him to do his job and be trustworthy and professional. I'm now worried he's going to slack off and eventually cause problems that put my reputation on the line. I pushed to get him hired - now I am wondering if I screwed up.

I suggest that you sit down with him and talk to him. Tell him what are your expectations from him and ask him what are his expectation from you. From there you can start to delineate his work position and your friendship during work hours. Also tell him frankly that if this delineation between your friendship and work relationship will not work for him, he might as well resign his employment. Also inform him that you did everything to get him hired and you will be embarrass and your reputation will be tarnish if he will not be able to deliver.

Most of the time this strategy works, but if not I know you know what to do...

No you didn't screw up. Most bosses hire with less information than that so anyone can be wrong.

But Yeah you got to talk to him. No way else to fix it. Its really a pain when people take liberties with you, especially if you have done them a favour. The good news is its usually easy to sort out 90% of the time. They get a quick shock, realise its you the boss, not you the chick, do a quick gear change( and maybe sulk a bit) but they will come around.

The key is this.

1. do it as if you were talking to any employee.
use normal procudures. If that is informal chat, do that first.By the numbers.
