You know that you've done a silly thing, and it's clear that you're regretting it all.
What you mustn't do is to pull yourself down further. You WILL get through this.
Sometimes, good people do bad things. I think this is what's happened here.
I don't see how you can continue denying the situation. The company will know what's happened, and I think that the best you can do is to own up.
If you continue to deny it, and the company has proof, you will definitely be sacked.
If you admit it NOW, or as soon as possible, you have a chance to put your side forward (to whoever is making the decision). Some thoughts on this..
- Make sure that the company knows that you regret it. Tell them how you're feeling. If they have a compassionate side, they will take this into consideration.
- Explain fully why you did it. From beginning to end. Why did you take it in the first place; it wasn't a 'sudden' thing as you had time to make the receipt, so you must have thought about it a bit.
- Explain how you've felt since you did it.
- Return the printer. It's probably no use if you've used it, but it could help.
- Ask them to forgive you. You know that you will need to work hard to gain their trust again, but you have shown before that you're a good employee. You can be a good employee again if they give you the chance.
You need to show, most of all, that you're a good employee who's made a big mistake.
Although it will be difficult for you, you will feel much better once it's all out in the open. I think they'll find out the truth anyway. This is your chance to tell them the truth yourself. Don't waste it. |

i think it depends on what you stole and why you stole it.
own up, then atleast you have a chance at keeping your job, if you don't own up then they find out, it's a deffo sack.
learn from your mistakes.
Hope this helps !

You stole something and now you're lying to them about it. Difficult to see how you avoid the sack. |

How much worse are going to feel if a coworker is accused and fired.
Talk to the manager and work it out. |

If you own up you'll get the sack on the spot, no question. I work in the Civil Service in London where it is virtually impossible to get the sack. I know one girl who slapped her manager, and got a five day suspension without pay - for assaulting a superior officer! Anywhere else you'd be out the door before the ink was dry on your P45. However, the one thing we can be sacked for is theft, and it does happen, all the time. So you can take it to the bank that if you tell your boss what you've done it's hello to the dole office and a looooong period of unemployment. This is what I did. On an impulse I swiped a laptop from a store room. I didn't think anyone would even notice it missing. Not so. Two days later they were tearing the place apart looking for the bloody thing, and talking about getting the police involved. Fortunately I hadn't installed anything on it that would lead to me so I carefully cleaned it of fingerprints and had a friend post it to the manager of the office here. There is an address sticker on the laptop so my mate could claim he found it dumped somewhere and was returning it out of the goodness of his heart if he'd been caught. To throw suspicion off me I waited until a notorious slacker here (the place is full of 'em) took a sick day and had my mate post the laptop from a virtual office just around the corner from his home. There were various rumblings and talk of further investigation but all that happened is they changed the locks on the storeroom. If the item you nicked is portable, I suggest you do the same. If it is isn't, then you'll have to think of a way of getting it back to the office without anyone knowing. Good luck. |

OK here goes...my son worked for a store in town. On his break he went to buy some candy for the holidays. This happened last Dec. 2007. When he didn't have the time he placed it to the side, went about his work & ended up being asked to work longer that day. He worked for a total of 13 hrs.! At the end of the day he grabbed up his belongs & left. He said after he got to his car & tossed the bag into the car he remembered he didn't do the transaction for the candy. When he got to work the next day ( at 10 a.m. ) he went to the back to pay for the candy but the security guy came up, they took him to a back room, interrogated him for hrs.! He is a very kind & gentle young man & he choked back tears as time went on because they kept saying to him "what else have you ever taken from us"! etc. He paid for his candy, was taken to the front door & shown the way out! Eight months later we received a lawsuit from the store & we hired an attorney. I am still paying for the attorney. We live in Indiana & our son attends college in Michigan. They keep him running down here for every little thing. Murderers have gotten away with crime but this young man is paying dearly! It's ridiculous! Good luck & just find another place to work & never take anything again! Our son has endured panic attacks & numerous trips to the E.R. because of his nerves now. |

What was it?!?
I'd put it somewhere and say OH LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!
Or just keep denying, how will they find out?!! |

Yes you can be sacked because it's a crime, they could also get you prosecuted. But I would own up, because the police would take that into consideration. If you haven't committed a crime before then they would be lenient with you.
Isn't it something you can just replace? |

Can you bring it back so it looks as if it was never stolen at all, just misplaced? Can you think of other possiblitlies as to what might have happened so they try to exclude those first, and give you more time to get the thing back?
Depending on what "it" is, you may be able to explain that you accidentally damaged it and have been trying to get it repaired privately so it wouldn't come to light. |
