I was bullied 20 years ago at work..can I take action?

hi, I am a 35 yr old male, back 1989 when I was 16(5'6""tall, small build) I got onto a training scheme and got a placement in a sign factory, I was all excited as it was my first work experience since leaving school. I ws doing well in the job and enjoying it and I got to know everying as the first few weeks past, then I noticed a certain 22 year male who's name I know kept having bit of a joke now and then which I shrugged off. As time went he seem to get worse, more personal comments but one day I got a knock on the shoulder and he walked off laughing. I was a bit shocked and hoped that was the end of it, but it got worse, he was pretending to play fight and I began to get punches on my arms, and I wasn't smiling or laughing. then I reaslised this person was singling me out, and bullying me. This went on day on day off depending of what mood he was in, and he knew what he was doing. My confidence drained away, I became withdrawn as it went on, some day were really bad, hit on a morning and afternoon, the boss was as soft as a brush and even caught him one day and just said stop messing with him, leave him alone, that was it, then he got me round the corner and did it some more. Also there were about 6-7 more workers in the place that saw alot of this going on so I could get witnesses from back then. I took the beatings and mental torture for a year then decided to just leave, I could'nt take it anymore. After 2 suicide attempts, and quitting job after job my life has been ruined. I am married with no kids as my confidence is so low even after 20 years. I still see the same man in my local town, now with kids and a wife strolling about without a care in the world. The main question here is, is it too late to take action. I feel I deserve some compensation and he deserves punishment. Please any advice.

Thanks for some of replies as it is a sensitive situation, and still feels as raw as it was back then. Yes I have had councelling. I know I should have done something at the time, but when your alone and confused in what to do at 16 years old it wasn't easy. I was brought up to stay out of trouble, well mannered. Its pretty hard to move on when you see the bully in my local town, happy and joking away and when he sees me just has a look he did back then.

Unfortunately the law of limitation does not allow the case to be opened now. I agree that this is a case of gross miscarriage of justice .

Far too late now, you should have done something about it at the time. Forget it and get on with your life.

It's too late. You need concrete evidence which fades after 20 years.

Unfortunately you're probably too late, due to the statute of limitations. After 20 years you won't be able to bring any sort of prosecution, even if you can find witnesses. Surely you should be able to put this behind you after all these years - is it really worth ruining the rest of your life over a situation that happened so long ago? It's well past time to let go and move on.

Edit: In that case, all you can do is to ignore him (not rudely), get on with your own life and make a sucess of it. Your life isn't ruined because there's much more of it to come. As I often say, we can't change the past but we can change the future.

DUDE!!!!!!!! shake it off.........LIFE......... it should have made you stronger,or are you using this as an excuse?? PLEASE let it go,next time you see the guy go ver and talk to him with his wife.Tell him what he did to you,and see what he says.if he threatens you now you have a case to tell the police.what does 5'6" have to do with anything?? work-out,build your muscles if you think you cannot survive in this society. You are now 36 you made it for 20 yrs.SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER TO ME........EXCUSE ME BUT ....A**HOLES ARE EVERYWHERE.........ENJOY YOUR FAMILY. YOU SHOULD HAVE WENT TO THE OWNERS

statute of limitations is probably long expired - most of the people involved and witnesses probably don;t even work there anymore. you should have gone over the bosses head back then if it kept going on after the boss witnessed it and told him to stop

No its far too late but you have become a better person through it.
Just because he has a family and seems to be strolling around doesn't mean that he doesn't have a care in the world, once a bully always a bully until someone stands up to them. You may not have witnessed it but i bet in 20 years someone may have.
I was nasty when i was at school and i cringe when i think of how i behaved. I met someone bigger than me and they gave me a dam good hiding and since then i have become a different person. Don't let this person see that he still gets to you try and hold your head up high when you see him and if possible say hallo you may find that time and a family has made him out to be a different person.
If you can't then just throw your shoulders back and think to yourself that you are a nice person and he is a piece of scum thats not worth your time and he can't touch you now.
If he does sue him.

No, you cannot file a case that happened 20 years ago. You have passed the statue of limitation which mean that there is a certain time frame where a person can bring up a claim and in most states it is between 5-7 years.
