This happens too much to be a coincidence - any suggestions ? It is illegal in my state to record phone conversations, so I can't have someone call and say they are interested in hiring me...

If you want to know if something is illegal in your state, you need to list your state.

However, what I would do is contact these people who sounded interested, and ask them what turned them off and what you can do to better prepare for future interviews. Some may be able to give you guidance. |

Most recruiters don't actually understand the industry they're dealing with - much less the individual job position. They simply play what I call keyword-bingo, where they, or more likely, their computer, scans your resume looking for specific terms or words. If you have enough matches, your resume is forwarded as being a good match. The excited recruiter then calls or emails me, asking if I'd be interested in such a position. At least 80% of the time, the job is for something I'm not even remotely qualified for, or is out-of-state, or, in one case, was for the very position I was just laid-off from!
If the company or recruiter isn't even kind enough to send you some sort of notification that they've decided not to go with you, they're just wasting your time. A good recruiter will at least give you feedback of some sort since they don't get paid unless they fill the position - and it's in everyone's best interest that the job be filled by the best possible candidate out there.
It also helps if you're also a bit more aggressive too. If they say they'll let you know in a few days, and then nothing, call them and ask what's going on. They may have decided to go with someone else, or maybe the guy was out sick. At least it shows you're interested in the job in the first place. |

When they call you they haven't actually looked at your details yet - just general resume stuff. Apparently they don't want you when they discover you've been fired. So sorry. This may haunt you for a couple more years. (It's like getting a notice that you're preapproved for credit.) |
