i asked her specifically why i was fired and she told me she could fire me at anytime or at will...that did not answer my question. Should i push it and tell her that while i understand i could be fired at will, could she tell me if i was fired for a reason or no reason. Would that be harassing her?

You can ask, it isn't harrassing her. But she doesn't have to give you a reason. Unless you were fired because of something like your race, gender, religion, or national origin, you can be fired for no reason. |

If you ask her be diplomatic about it. Tell her the reason you want to know is so you do not repeat the mistake at you next employer. Actually most of the time unless you are in a union an employer can let an employee go anytime they want. So be diplomatic when you ask, just so you get a fair recommendation from her for your next job. |

Its not harassing just to ask. You are entitled to an real explanation. Tell her you will stop asking if she just tells you the truth, it shouldn't be that hard for her. Make it clear you just want an explanation, you are not lobbying to be rehired. |

Nope, not if you are inquiring why you were fired or laid off.
Remember, it may be at-will, but it must be a lawful termination. If it is an unlawful termination, although you may be in an at-will state, the employer is still bound by federal and state laws on what is considered at-will employment and what is considered rightful termination under the at-will statutes.
If they (supervisor / employer) will not disclose why you're employment was terminated under the at-will, (you have a right to know the reason under federal and state employment laws), there is possibility of a lawsuit on your part for improper termination of employment.
Seems like your supervisor is under the presumption because it is an at-will state, you can be fired any time for any reason. This type of thinking is common from employers who gets dragged into the courts because of a unlawful termination suit filed by x-employees.
You should check in your local state website, under the department of civil service, department of labor (state and Federal websites) for starters.
