I don't know if you are in the United States or not. Being an independent contractor you should have had your own Workers Comp or liability insurance when you took the job. As for replacing you, do you have contract? Was there a time period put on the work. They may have had to get someone else to finish if they had a finish date and they were behind

If you are an independent contractor, then you are technically your own employer and your "boss" is a client. You could of hired someone to sub in for you while you are on disability, but since you did not, the client hired someone else to finish the job. Move on and learn....

One of the risks of working as independent contractor is that you must pay your own worker compensation, etc.

The person that hired you to work as independent contractor can fill your position if you are not able to work.

DId the boss require that you obtain business license, etc. ? If not, then Department of Labor, as well as I.R.S., may consider you an employee. That is worth checking out.

You live on your savings and use the health care insurance that you purchased. If you have neither, this is a problem.

By the way, this wasn't a "job"--this was a "contract." This wasn't your "boss"--this was your "client." Speak to a lawyer, you may have grounds to sue if the client's site was unsafe.
