Its not on any criminal records or anything, but I was just denied a job in retail because of this. What can I do?

The Truth
stop stealing

How can employers find out if it's not part of your criminal record? Are you sure that's accurate? Maybe start by calling the police department and find out whether or not it's on your record. You will need to fill out some forms.

If not, then maybe speak with the store and find out what's going on.

You shouldn't have shop lift, this most likely will follow you the rest of your life for being stupid. For heaven sakes hope you have learned your lesson.Know right from wrong next time.Be cool ( be the Leader) by teaching others to know the differents in Right And Wrong doings.Never be a follower your sure to find bad trouble as you already did. Stay out of trouble.

It is one of those tough lesson of life. You may have this follow you for ever. most retail stores, want to know who you are because you by yourself, have named your self a thief in there eyes and they don't want to forget.

The only way you can get through your interview is to openly discuss the issue and tell them what you have learned through this experience. Why should they hire someone who has already taken advantage of something over someone who does not have any criminal faults? Perhaps you have inside knowledge of what to look for in theft cases, maybe you have learned a lesson the hard way and paid for the losses. Maybe you still are not trustworthy and have just learned how to not get caught next time, either way you have to instill some kind of reason why they should trust you over the next guy.

I seem to recall some kind of place that you can pay to have stuff taken off your record. I don't remember what it's called, but that would be somewhere to start to remove your shop-listing conviction.

As a former retail assistant manager, it's not so much what the amount was, but just the mere fact that you were caught shop lifting, is not a welcome trait in any employee for retail. If nothing else I would see with the county office and see what you can do to remove the charges, but if it was something that you did after the age of 18 it's most likely going to follow you.
