I was recently terminated from my job for violating company policy. Should I divulge this on applications ?
Find answers to your legal question.

I was recently terminated from my job for violating company policy. Should I divulge this on applications ?

I was employed as a department manager for 11 years with my last employer. I always had acceptable or better annual reviews. I went outside of company policies to complete my job one day and was terminated for this. I did nothing illegal, but did break policy.

How much of this should I reveal to any prospective employers ? I have been mostly truthful about this while looking for a new job over the past 3 months, but my honesty has not gotten me many interviews unfortunately.
The only interview which I did have, I was not completely truthful. But I DID get an interview at least. Should I continue omitting the real reason I left my last employer ?

Honesty is the best policy. However, it seems that you are giving out information before it is even asked for. On your application list your end date and for the reason if it asks list "difference of opinion". Thus, you are not lying. When you get the interview, if you are asked to elaborate on the reason for leaving do not go into great detail. Simply state that in order to get the job done it was necessary to make some exceptions in instances and your superior was not happy with this style of management. Do not be forthright and state you did not follow company policies. This is an immediate red flag and you will never be hired for a position. Prospective employers to not like employees who do not comply with company policies.

Therefore, if you phrase it in a way as I have suggested you are being honest to the prospective employer and may land the job. However, I suggest in the future, if you need to break company policy in order to get the job done, you need to run it by your superior before doing so, do not make a pattern of this type of behavior or the trail will continue to follow you.

Best wishes on your employment endeavor.

Better to tell the truth.

I think it is very noble that you want to be truthful but my experience has been that a termination will get your resume pushed to the bottom of the pile. I would simply say something such as you chose to leave the company because you did not agree with a company policy or better yet, the company decided to take a new direction and that gave you an opportunity to venture off to do something new after 11 years. I would not allow your potential employers to call this company to check your references.

the important thing here is to say you LEARNT FROM YOUR MISTAKES, AND IT WONT HAPPEN AGAIN

the world doesnt care that you make mistakes. we are humans. we all do. important thing is to show you learnt from it and wont do it again.

good luckk!

Just call it 'creative differences with administration' as your reason for leaving

If they ask why you left that employer, you have to be truthful. Say you were fired. But you do not have to elaborate. Be as vague as possible, while still being truthful when answering questions about things like this.

It was a mutual agreement for you to leave. It's not necessary to go into so much detail. It's just shooting yourself in the foot as you have already learned.

You don't have to lie, just don't mention all the truth. Of coarse no one will want to hire some one who has gotten terminated from their previous employer. Some may not even look at your application beyond that question. Make your self look good and the best. If needed find a friendly coworker to put as a manger, just in case someone will be verified employment or something in this attitude. Good Luck with finding a job.

No way! No How! never answer that ...."fired due to company policy"
If I recall from a friend of mine ....he was in the same predicament, he only found a job when he never told anyone!! of that situation! remember that most of the time they only look at your resume! & 90% of the time they do not even call past employers! So NO!

If they get a reference from your old employer they are not allowed to tell them WHY you were terminated - they can however say that you were let go - so will give the idea to any prospective employer that there was a problem.

They will only use it against you. If you cannot let sleeping dogs lie, word it in such a way that the reason involved something questionable.

in my opinion (and i've been in the business world for many years - in fact, one of my *first* jobs was at a national newspaper, reviewing resumes for executive positions), i'd say your BEST option is to not disclose it unless asked directly.
