If you live in the USA its against the law to ask a previous employer why you were let go. They can ask how long you worked there.

i've been sacked once, i always put on application forms that i left "for career reasons" i don't see a problem, it's not like i'm making up fake qualifications. anyway, what's the likelihood they'll find out?

Why would they find out, unless you tell them. Did you do something criminal, and even if you did this should not affect your current employment.

I would think that you could only be sacked if 1) you were specifically asked the question and you lied about the answer, meaning it could be considered that you were employed under false pretences, or 2) it was a condition of your new job that you have never been sacked.

The fact this was 7 years ago I wouldn't be too concerned with it unless you have applied or working at an executive level position. This is one of the few times HR will do an extensive background check. You can put lack of work or decided to pursue other career endeavors. Additionally, very rare a company will keep the employee folder for such a long period of time and merely put in the database employee name with dates of employment and no other information due to the amount of time that has gone by. Although there are no laws that an employer cannot give a bad recommendation (unfortunately) the smarter companies never do and merely give DOH and position held. Salary is not disclosed unless a signed waiver is given by the former employee to release that information under the Privacy Act. No need to worry.

Seven years later, they will have formed their own opinion about you. People are sacked for all sorts of reasons and the mere fact that you were sacked from a previous employer would probably be irrelevant from your current employer's point of view. It is hard to see how they could possibly find out, anyway. Get on with your job and make a success of it! This is the job that counts -- and there is no reason to fear being sacked because of past problems!

only if you lied.

Though it isn't illegal to state that you are not elligible for rehire, they are not allowed to give you a negative reference. However, if you did something illegal or there is any legal action that they've filed against you, the company you currently work for can do a background check to find that out.

If you lied on your application in any way, they can dismiss you for that. It's illegal for you lie on an application, and in many cases, company policy dictates that would be grounds for immediate dismissal.

If you are doing your job properly and didn't lie on your application about your job title or anything else for that matter, you should be okay. Also, you can't control those who used to work with you, and anyone who tells your current employer anything is not under legal obligation to keep that confidential. Coworkers, supervisors who have since left the company and others with knowledge of your dismissal can say and do whatever they like.

Hope this helps.
