we are told we are not to leave the premises due to security reasons do we have a right to leave the building during our break?

I think this depends. If you signed a legal document agreeing to not leave, then you're stuck. Otherwise, they cannot detain you within the store.
Either way, the security reasons are likely your own, not the stores. There are some sketchy people out there who will take advantage of individuals coming out of a store into the dark. |

On breaks, no. On an unpaid lunch period, you probably could legally leave. On the other hand, if not being allowed to leave is policy for security reasons, and you do anyway, you probably won't be employed there much longer. |
