Find answers to your legal question.

I work at a chain restaurant. Is it possible to get fired for being two minutes late?

Literally, two minutes. Monday I go to be formally fired. Are there any rights that i have due to labor laws? My theory is she fired me because my boyfriend is in management. But, he was just promoted there after we started dating. Is there a correlation? I'm a very hardworker and this just doesn't make sense. PLEASE help!

of course they can fire you for being two minutes late. your schedule is designed to flow with your co workers schedule. if you are coming in and replacing someone who's shift is over or they need to take lunch you are causing them to be late as well. two minutes doesn't seem like much but time can be critical in some positions. if everyone was a few minutes late it could be very disruptive. your two minutes could cause two minutes of overtime for someone. multiply that times the # of people who work there and see how it adds up in payroll. companies don't like that.

You're very unlikely to get fired for just that. Depending on your managers and your overall punctuality, you could just get a warning (or something similar depending on the chain).

depending in which state you live in,you CAN get fired for any reason.
Here in Texas the law states that an employer can fire you at anytime for any reason EXCEPT for your race, gender, religion etc....

Did you sign any papers when you first got the job? What is their attendance policy? You need to find that out. If it states that an employee can and will be fired for any lateness, then as petty as it sounds, they can fire you. Labor laws only help how long you work without a break , and amount of time in between shifts..and how many hours you work a week..even then there are loop holes...

Pretty much no... They can do whatever the hell they want to you as long as they have SOME reason... And being "Late" is a good enough reason...

Labor laws in the US are set up to protect the company, not the individual unless you are disabled, gay, a women, or a minority and you have EVIDENCE that you were fired because of discrimination.

Even then, they can pull any excuse they want out of their butt and it is on YOUR head to prove that it is just an excuse.
