i have worked for them since dec 07 and have to take time off sick am i entitled to sick pay or am i gonna be shocked at end of month?

depends on the companies policy some require you to be employed for a year and some dont pay any sick pay whatever. you would be entitled to SSP statutary sick pay if your employer doesnt pay you but the first 3 days arent paid for and its only about £70 a week for over 18 (possibly 21 not too sure).
ask your union rep if your in the union they should know. |

I would be surprised if you would get any sick pay. If you do, it might not be very much. The best thing is to ask your boss or ask at the Citizen's Advice Bureau. |

its totally different for every job some might give you PTO right away or after 90 days or maybe not till a full calendar year or just a full year since you were hired. |

The law doesn't make employers provide paid sick time -- it's up to the individual company. Where I work we allow paid sick leave after six months of employment. Some companies allow it earlier, some after a year, some don't ever offer paid sick leave.
Check your employee handbook or with your supervisor. |

My partner is a trainee manager at a large well known retailer and was in a similar position to you..
Started Dec 07 too, was ill last month and had to take some days off sick - unpaid for the first three days! Massive shock at the end of the month, we can hardly meet bills.
I'd advise you to check your contract and ask your line manager... Good luck.
Apparantly you can apply for benefits from the job centre for the time you were off sick if it was unpaid sick leave! Its only about £15 a day but better than nothing and helps with the bills :) |
