I was supposed to receive my paycheck via direct deposit on 12/31. The end of the pay period was on 12/23. My supervisor decided to deduct pay for an error I committed on 12/31, cancelled my direct deposit, wrote a personal check with the difference. I believe it was out of anger.

Please note that "alteration" and "correction" are different things !!. If it is corrected and signed it is not an offense, Even if the amount is corrected and countersigned for a genuine reason ( in this case over payment) it is perfectly legal as far the negotiable instruments act !!! |

What do you mena altered? If they made a mistake and corrected it, sure. Why wouldn't it be. |

you committed an error? tsk tsk....but no employer has a right to deduct money for an error...Your check was not "altered" it was "changed"....words mean two different thigns. Check with a lawyer if you feel you were wronged, can afford to, and want to try to get a few dollars back and cause a ruckus over doing so. Otherwise keep your mouth shut and look for other work without telling your employer because when people do something on the job they get on the bad list and the employer probably is thinking about letting you go in the future, so find another employer before they do that to you. |
