I would like to take a break from working, is it okay to tell my employer I resign but come back later?
Find answers to your legal question.

I would like to take a break from working, is it okay to tell my employer I resign but come back later?

I have been with my current employer for 2 years. I want to go back to school and I would like to take a break from working. I want to go traveling and focus on getting into graduate school.

Is it okay to resign and ask for the option to come back?
Additional Details
I have been told that I am one of the greatest employees that they have ever hired. I just want advise on what I should say. Can I actually say, I want to resign but I want the option to come back.

you can ask and you should.....................
they don't have to agree, a lot will depend on your job performance and their staffing needs when you decide to come back to work.
they do not have to offer a leave of absence even if you ask for it.

I think the only person who can answer that question is your boss. Go and talk to him, and tell him what you'd like to do. Chances are good he'll appreciate you letting him know. Make sure you give him at least 2 weeks notice before leaving.

You can ask. They probably won't guarantee anything, but if you've been a good employee and they have an opening when you want to come back, they'd probably hire you again.

you can ask to come back but they do not have to let you. If you leave on good terms they will be more likely to consider you in the future

Why not take a leave of absence?

Pretend to be pregnant (you know, gain a few pounds around the belly) and take a maternity leave.

haha just kidding.
