If I was injured off the job and can still do my job can I be fired/placed on leave while I am recovering?

I was in a car accident almost a year ago, I was out of work for 12 weeks and then returned. Since then I have developed tarsal tunnel syndrome.(It's like carpal tunnel, but in the ankles) This is entirely not work related at all, my manager has expressed concerns about this condition as it causes me to walk with a pronounced limp. 90% of my job can be done from a seated position and I can walk for the other 10%, just slowly and as I said with a limp. Is there anything that my employer could do to me just for walking funny?

If you are in the US, your employer may not discriminate against you for a physical disability if it does not affect your job. In fact, in some cases they may be required to provide "reasonable accommodation". THis is the link to the EEOC page regarding disability: http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/disability.cfm

Once you have this information, you can then determine if your situation is covered by this regulation and know your rights and responsibilities.

I agree with Jobbend...and also if you are planning to take time off, you need to look up FMLA laws. There are many restrictions on what they can do if you are disabled temporarily or permanently.

You say that 10% of your job involves walking, and you can only walk slowly. So your injury DOES affect your job. They could terminate you.
