If I work from home, is it legal for them to ask me to "make up time" when they are having technical probs?

Hi, I am a web-commuter and I am just curious if it is legal for the company I work for to make it necessary for me to make up hours that I am not able to connect to thier system because of an issue either planned or not planned on their end. For instance, I will be working my shift and they will have to do some system maintenance...while im working...if it takes them 2 hours, they will make me make up that time. Doesnt seem fair, but Im just wondering if its legal? Just curious...

YOU'RE WORKING FROM HOME! Most people would KILL to do that.

Work with them.

If you were working at their office, they could tell you to clock out for two hours, and then come back later.

Yes, it's annoying. You might mention to your boss that they probably experience some employee turnover due to stunts like that.

That's a question for a labor relations board. Are you paid hourly or on a salary? This may or may not affect the issue.

I don`t know if legal or not, but is fair if you are working by the piece and not hour.Since this was neither the employer or employee fault, I think the pay should be split.

Absolutely. Unlike people who are trapped in an office from 8am to 5pm who would just have to wait out a 2 hour system update by doing other things, you can go out and play. Don't work = don't get paid.
