If moving to the USA, NYC in particular.........?

With a law degree obtained in the UK, what would I have to do to begin practicing law there? Any help whatsoever on this subject would be very much appreciated. Is it difficult to transfer over, and are employers open to hiring lawyers from overseas?

you have to pass the bar for whatever state you move to no matter if it is New York, Texas, California, Alaska it doesn't matter every state requires you to pass the bar exam for that state. employers will be open to hiring you once you pass the bar exam until then you cannot practice law legally in that state.

You'd need to pass the bar exam in NY state.

"QUALIFICATIONS

There are several ways that you can qualify to sit for the New York Bar Exam. The first way is to graduate from an ABA approved law school. The second way is to attain a combination of law school and law office study. For more information about this read Section 520.4 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals. The third way that you can qualify to sit for the New York Bar Exam is to graduate from a non-ABA approved law school and be a licensed attorney in another state for at least five years. The final way to qualify is to graduate from a foreign law school. In addition to these educational requirements you will also need to pass background check and pass the MPRE with a score of at least 85 points.

If you have additional questions about taking the New York Bar Exam after reading this article you can visit the official site for the New York Bar Exam at http://www.nybarexam.org/barexam.htm."

Good luck!

In order to practice law in the States, you'll have to bass the BAR exam in the state in which you'll be practicing (NY). Here's a link with the info http://www.nybarexam.org/ I'm really not sure about your last question, but maybe visiting the NY BAR Association website would answer some of that. GL with t e transition =)
