If my husband wants to quit his job and go to school can he get unemployment?

He's had the same job for 10 years and now has decided to quit and go to school. Im wondering ....does he have to be fired???

Thanks for you input "earkle" however I must respond to you lil jab at the end. My husband and I were both born and raised in the US as were both our parents. So why should the tax payers pay him to go to school?? Because WE ARE the tax payers and we have paid into the system that gives freely to those who hop a border and live off the system for the rest of their lives. If my husband wants to change his profession after 20 years of tax payn' back breakn' hell.....then Go* DAMN straight he has every right too!

In most states, the rules are that if you quit you can not collect anything (and rightly so....we can't afford to pay unemployment to everyone who quits). If you are FIRED you can often only collect partial benefits or there may be a delay in benefits. If you are laid off (terminated through no fault of your own) then you can collect right away.

I'm not picking on your husband, it's great if he wants to go back to school, but honestly, why should the taxpayers pay him unemployment just because he wants to go to school instead of work?

Sorry to upset you, but we ALL work for our whole lives and pay into the system. But unemployment is there as a temporary crutch for people who need it not people who want it. If your husband wants to try to better his situation, that's great. Not a jab, but he'll have to do what myself and thousands of people around the country do all the time. Find a way to balance both school and work. It's not an easy situation, but it's what most people have to do. Unemployment is designed as insurance for unavoidable situation, it is not an educational aid. They may have programs for that, but not unemployment. And the issue really has nothing to do with "border jumpers."

No, thats not the purpose for unemployment benefits. he can apply for a student loan to cover stuff while in school, but you do have to pay that back.

No. Your husband cannot obtain unemployment because he voluntarily quit his job. Yes, he would have had to been fired or laid off to obtain unemployment.

I know in NY state you have to be fired to collect unemployment. Keep in mind unemployment will contact the job he was fired from and ask questions to see if he got himself fired just to collect unemployment. If his job gives them any reason to believe that he purposely got himself fired they will refuse him unemployment. His best bet would be to ask for reduced hours at his job so he can still make money and at the same time take classes. Also keep in mind unemployment is only temporary it only last I think 6 months.
