If you are off work sick over christmas and have a doctor's certificate do you lose the public holidays?

Can you take them at a later date in the year?

In the USA, that would depend on your companies policies, and whether you are salary or hourly. Companies I've worked for in the past, if you were hourly, you had to work the day before and the day after a holiday to get paid for it - and you wouldn't get a make up holiday later - never heard of that concept

Check your Employment Contract / Terms & Conditions booklet .. generally it will state something like 'Holiday Entitlement is X days per year plus the Bank Holidays (Xmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years day .... )'

It will also say something like 'Time In-Leiu. If you work a weekend / Bankholiday day, your Manager may agree with you to take (1 Day, 1.5 days, 2 days, whatever) 'time in lieu' ...

So, since you did not work Xmas Day, you will not be entitled to either Holiday or Tine-in-lieu ..

If you are in the UK it would a generous employer that allowed you to carry them forward to later in the year. My suspicion is you will lose them - check your company policy

It depends on your company's Policy and Procedure
I worked for the Local Authority and if you were off sick you lost your entitlement, and the manager could make you use them to suit the establishment, the only holiday we had a say on was our Annual Leave entitlement we could use them when we wanted them, there was also a push for you to have used half of your entilement by 6 months of your year

Depends on your policy and procedure handbook that you were given and you signed upon hiring.
