forth, can you get an attorney?? And can the attorney have one person tell what they know or heard...providing you know of one person that knows something??

Yes you can, but you better have the cash to pay for it. It will be very expensive. You had also have "for sure" proof that the slander happened or you can be fired then sued by the work place personel.

Bring fact if you have to your supervisor in private and
state what is going on .and have her have a meeting
to pin it down. She can discuss the nature of gossip
and the dangers that can arise from it, is in being sued for
"defamation of charactor " by the indiviual and that if they
cannot say something nice about a person keep their thoughts to themselves. Let's know what happens.

Slander is hard to prove, unless it has affected your job directly, it is best to be left alone. If no one will admit it- how can you be positive ? You can not rely on hearsay in a court of law..

In a situation where it is one person's word versus another it's pretty hard to pin it down. An attorney can not "force" someone to talk to them. That would be under subpeona, and through a court. To get it to that point will be pretty costly to do, and then the person can still claim innocense and to not know anything.

If this is a former employer that you suspect is giving our false information about you to prospective employers then you will need to get proof in order to file a civil court case against them. Have a friend call up as a prospective employer and do a reference check on you. Get it in writing, not on the telephone. You can not tape secretly record a telephone conversation in most states. Check your states laws regarding telephone tape recording and whether or not your state is a 2 party consent, or one party consent state. (each state varies)
