Absolutely, unless you prefer doing free labor.

Yes you are -- unless you have a contract that was signed where you are required to work x days -- then, although you are able to be paid for the one day they could potentially apply that to a fine or something.

You would be entitled to be paid for the hours you work, not necessisarily an 8 hour day. Unless you are salaried exempt, then you should be paid for the whole day.

Yes. Depending on what happened and why it was only one day. But, if you physically worked, they have to at least pay you for the time that you were there. They do not necessarily have to pay any kind of 'show pay'. And hopefully, you completed all your paperwork for a new hire, before you started any work.
