Illegal interview question???

Illegal interview question???

I had an interview a few days back....The person who interviewed my asked why I could not work on a certain day. Because I go to church...The person looked a bit funny and then
the person then went to ask "Do you go to church the whole day than?" I said that It was a religious day so I could not work....

Now...I'm pretty sure that they can't ASK about religion...Was that not an illegal question?
-thanks

maybe they need someone to work that day, and if youre not able to they should hire someone else. pick your priorities.

bluemagick13
nope, its a legitimate question. you just need to explain that you won't work on days worship.

It would then become illegal if the interview said I can't hire you because you can't work Sundays. The interviewer was only checking you availability you brought up religion the interviewer only asked if you could work Sundays they did not ask "Are you a Cristian or muslin etc."

I don't think it's illegal. They weren't asking about your particular religious practices, they were just trying to ascertain whether or not you would be able to work that day, whatever their personal feelings may have been are irrelevant.

first-You mentioned church first so it was obviously not his intention to bring religion thing up
second - may be he just wants to check your availability.
thats what i think

Not an illegal question.

They can't based hiring decisions against you strictly on your religious affiliation. However, if it's a huge burden to the employer to give you that day off, then they don't have to hire you.

Ok so now we have to deal with people whining about an employer asking about you being able to work? She asked a legitimate question. If you "can't" work on sundays...I say..you "can't" work here. period. I don't even think its illegal if they say "I can't hire you because you can't work sundays" thats a crock..what if they need someone on sundays only? hmmm?

get over it

The first question wasn't illegal, but the second one ("Do you go to church the whole day then?") was.

I think you were taking it too offensively....

They just wanted to know why you can't work the whole day.
You should have said something like: "I don't work on religious days of worship".

They could have been nicer though.
