Illegal to force employees to use vacation time?
|
Just out of curiosity, would it be legal for a company to be closed for a holiday, but force salaried exempt employees to either use vacation time or take the day off without pay?
If not, what would be the course of action for the employees? Additional Details To airjarrod: "At least you weren't fired."
Yeah...that helped us all feel better when they did a company-wide 5% pay cut right before Christmas rather than trimming the fat we all know is there. That rationalization isn't working for us anymore. It may not be illegal, but it is at least unethical.

It would be unusual and bad management to have the entire company close for the day and than not pay its salaried employees for the day. However, it will also depend upon your contract with the employer.
Companies may require employees to use their vacations - in fact it is generally used as a safeguard for employee theft prevention.
Speak with your HR department and inform them that you are salary and should be paid the same regardless of the companies choice to close, |

No, it's not illegal.
They're not required to even give you vacation time in the first place.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. At least you weren't fired. |

No, it is not illegal to force employee to use their vacation time. Vacation is a benefit that company's offer to their employees, like all benefits it can be taken away at any time for any reason. |
