Im an office mgr. I have been MADE to sign a time card w/out being given a reason. I am the only 1 in the comp

I have worked as an office manager for about a year now. Out of the blue last week the HR manager said that I have to fill out and sign a time card. When asked why she said because its the law, however I am the only person in the company who has to fill out a time card. I am the only office manager or administrative person within the company and I am the only one who has to sign the time card, NO ONE ELSE. Is there a law that says that I have to fill out a time card? I work in NJ but the company (our parent company) is in CA. Is this legal? Additional Details I am not an hourly employee. I am salary and I dont get paid overtime. So why am I the only one filling out a time card.

it does not matter if you are hourly or salary if you are not exempt from overtime then a record of your hours must be kept.
many, many salary positions are not legally exempt from overtime and that is probably the case with your position. being exempt from overtime has nothing to do with job titles but only to do with the actual duties of the job.
the only positions that are not required by law to have a record of their time punches are those who are paid salary and exempt from overtime.
if you are salaried and exempt your employer can keep a record of the hours you work, it is their right to know how much you work even if they don't have to pay overtime. |

You probably get paid by the hour where the others are on salary |

If you are paid hourly, then there needs to be some kind of accountability for your time - that is typically the legal record. You benefit in that if you are working overtime, you are paid overtime. If everyone else is being paid salary, then they typically won't fill out a time record. |

Are you the only hourly employee? It generally makes sense for businesses to require a time card from all hourly employees, as it serves as a good legal record of all hours worked. If the other employees are salaried, they would not need to submit time cards because their hours are variable. |

There is no law stating you must do it, but if you do not comply the company can legally fire you. Sounds like they are watching you and want to make sure you are working when you say you are. |
