As the first poster asked, what is your position?
If you're a secretary, what experience did you have before? Or did you have zero experience? There really isn't any type of training for a secretary - open and sort the mail for your attorney [the mail clerk will sort out per secretary/attorney and only give you the mail for you and/or your attorneys], transcribe dictation [the machine is fairly easy to use/figure out], input billing entries for the attorney [the attorney will already tell you how much to bill for each item].
If you're a new paralegal, I suggest speaking with other paralegals as to what they do, but it is usually whatever the attorney assigns you. Draft pleadings, draft discovery requests, draft discovery responses. You should be able to read the complete file to be able to find the information you need to do this. If you don't know the proper format on how to do it, ask the attorney how he/she likes it done (or see what other similar cases he/she has worked on so you can see the format).
If you're an associate, it's fairly similar to a paralegal as far as the work is concerned (drafting pleadings & discovery, but you will be able to conduct depositions, etc.). Again, if you don't know what to do, speak with your boss (most firms are divided into sections, based upon the area of practice and you should be assigned to a specific senior partner/associate to work with). Find out how he/she likes things done OR if you don't want to do that, then find similar cases that he/she has worked on (while at that firm) and review those for examples.
If you're in another position with the firm, tell us.
What are the "certain issues" that you are speaking about? We need more details. |

you didn't say what kind of job you had.
During the first 3 months (probabionary period) usually the employer sizes up the employee and the employee gets to size up the employer and the firm in general. It's only after the probationary period is over that they review your performance in the firm and determine whether you should go forward (and be trained) or it's time for you to leave. Wait for your review, and if it doesn't come then ask for it. "Then" make your decision. In that review they will give you time to speak....be all upbeat and positive and say how much you like the firm and that you'd like to learn more. |
