Police officer salaries vary by department. Obviously you have to not only look at salary, but cost of living in the area you are considering. Also, with many police departments there is a lot of opportunity for overtime. Many police departments are looking for qualified candidates. Many are having a difficult time finding qualified applicants. There are many things to consider when thinking about becoming a police officer. There are many things that you can do to increase your chances of becoming a police officer. Check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for excellent information and advice about becoming a police officer. Also, there is a good book that I would recommend. It is "I Love A Cop: What Police Families Need to Know" by Ellen Kirschman, Ph.D. It is a good book for people considering becoming a police officer and for their families. |

I do think that this is a noble proffession...and obviously there is quite a bit of job security however, be sure that this is a job that you really want to do, the risks and stresses are quite high and quite a few officers have marriages that end in divorce (more than the already high national average).
Quite a few local police officers have 'ride along' programs where citizens can ride along with local law enforcement and get an idea if this is the right kind of job for them |

I've had a badge, and worked for some law enforcement entity, for over forty years. It is a good job, but the hours are terrible, and the responsibilities are great. Depending on what area of the country that you work in, and who you are employed by the pay is either very good or very poor. The benefits are usually what makes the job good. Many cops are also involved in second jobs, or trades. Before you sign on to a department, find out about the detail work, overtime, and court time. I noticed that someone mentioned the divorce rate, its about 75%. You will be required to work weekends, holidays, and your wife may resent it. You will find that your friends, especially those that "smoke", will regard you with suspicion. You will find that your attitude toward people will change. Before you go forward, talk it over with your wife, and tell her all this. If she says "OK", than go for it. |

Don't cops have one of the highest divorce rates of any profession?
Besides, as a cop you have huge responsibilities... your choices ruin lives. Imagine you get caught up in the moment and make a mistake.... someone's entire life could be over. Wow... I wouldn't want to live with that. |
