In CA can my employer pay for my lunch break?
Find answers to your legal question.

In CA can my employer pay for my lunch break?

Our company is trying to add another benefit to our office by paying a half hour lunch each day for each employee. My Manager is trying to see if it is legal for an employer in CA to pay for lunch periods. I'm sure it's up to the employer and shouldn't be a problem. I want to make sure before we start this new benefit. Thank you!

Of course it's legal. They don't have to, but they can.

For hourly workers you need to be careful. If you want to handout a monthly bonus for whatever reason, that's not a problem. But when you start tying it to a period which is a required break by law, it could be misconstrued.

When gas prices rose extremely high, we gave employees a $50 bonus to help offset gas costs. So you could give employees a monthly lunch bonus to offset the rising cost of food - but state it that way, and not associate with their hourly wages.
