In California, can an employer make you stay to work after they have you clock out?

A couple days ago, i was helping close the store I work at. I was told to clocked out at 1 am. However, the manager made me stay until well past 2:30 am cleaning the store. The claim she made was that this cleaning was work that should have been done all along. I am pretty sure that's illegal. But I'm not positive. Should I call the labor board or what?

it is not legal....
first you need to contact your stores general manager;
if that is who told you this then contact the regional/district manager if they have one.
if there is NOT anyone higher up in the company to report this to and/or they do NOT correct this immediately then contact the state...........

You're correct, that's illegal.

It was illegal.... call the labor board.

CA does not allow an employer to force their employees to finish prep work or clean up duties after they are "off the clock".

Show this to your Manager... and put the hour and half on your time card.
