According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which is a federal law, you can tell the creditors to "Cease and Desist" and they are not allowed to call you at work anymore. But you do still owe the debt, you do still have to pay it, and you do have to give them a good alternative address to contact you. You can tell the creditor to "Cease and Desist" over the phone, but it is better to do it in writing. Keep copies of everything.
Remember: You do still have to pay the bill. |

Harassment is never legal. What you need to find out is whether their actions are amounting to harassment. The other poster probably has it right. Findlaw.com or lectlaw.com has a lot of free law.
In a quick search, I learned that the federal statute mentioned does apply in VA for pay day advance loans. Therefore, it probably applies to others. Check it out.
You also just shouldn't take their calls. A saw a documentary on Credit, and it said bill collectors said the minute the get you talking the better their chances are. Calling more than a few times a day almost surely would be harassment. So, if you just don't pick up their calls, you will be in good shape probably. |
