In the U.S. what do people who loose their job live on whilst they look for other work?

I have heard of food stamps. How do they work? What abou peoples rent or other essential expenses such as heating and lighting or even clothes. It must be the case that some people are out of work for substantial periods. Through a lack of education or experience they may find it quite hard to find work. I am not talking about those who do not want to work and would rather fund their life with crime, I am asking about those who do really try as hard as they can to do the right thing but are held back by being unsuitable for many jobs. How do they get by? How do they pay rent? How do they afford to replace items of clothing they may need in order to look respectable at a job interview.

There is social security. Clothing can be had very cheap here. You can go to charity stores and if you are prepared to spend the time you can get amazing outfits for very little money.

Whilst I am not against food stamps, I get rather annoyed when I see people pay for their groceries with the stamps and then buy beer and cigarettes with money. If you are that stricken for money the beer and cigarettes should be the first things to give up.

If someone worked for long enough to be covered (generally , worked for several months at least), they can collect unemployment benefits for a time that's usually up to 6 months, but right now it's been extended to 9 months. They have to be available for work and looking for work to be eligible to collect benefits, and can get them if the are laid off, or fired but not for serious misconduct. If someone just quits their job, they aren't eligible.

There are also various welfare payments available from the government to help people who need it. One of these government programs is food stamps, which can be available to people whose income is below a certain amount - the amount varies by family size. People who are working can be eligible for food stamps as well as people who aren't working. The person gets coupons (or more often today, a card pre-loaded for the amount they are eligible for) and can spend those to buy food items.

They receive what is called Unemployment Compensation for up to 6 months. This is a check for about 70% of what you earned while working.

When I lost my job several years ago due to downsizing I was able to collect unemployment insurance. It covered a little over 50% of what I was earning. It was just enough to cover my bills. Normally unemployement insurance lasts 6 months but because of the bad economy I was able to get an extension to 9 months. That helped me out when I was looking for work. You can only collect unemployment if you were let go not fired, if you are fired you cannot collect.
