I can't see why it wouldn't be allowed but someone told me the other day that it's illegal for a company to contact someone who's taken holidays.

No, that would be an urban myth. Whilst you are fully entitle to your hols and time off there is nothing in place (unless by prior agreement by way of contractual terms) that would legally prohibit your employer from contacting you whilst on leave.
If you have stated this is not acceptable then they must abide by your request; not enforceable with specific laws to support however, not per se anyway.
