We have always been allowed a 15 min paid break but since we got a new boss we have been made to take an extra half hour unpaid break if we work six hours .
The bad thing is that they make us stay half an hour more than before .so we end up at work for 6 and half hours rather than six is this legal , they told us it was because of new legislation.
I work in a large diy chain in the uk.

The European Working Time Directive stipulates that all workers must take a minimum 20 minute break after every six hours of work. This has been the law for at least 10 years!
Your 'new' boss is being 'smart'.
The only control you can have over this is to insist that you leave the premises during that break and are unavailable to the employer during that time. This is the only legal right you have in such a situation. |

You are legally entitled to take a break after working six hours but you cannot be FORCED into taking it. |

Your new boss sounds like a "jobsworth", ask him/her for proof of this so-called new legislation, if it exists, because new bosses if they want to change things, are pretty good at hiding behind that as they think its sounds official and that you will swallow it, or speak to acas and ask if they know about it. My new boss tried changing part of my job that id done for 14 years, hiding behind "recent legislation, i found out since that there is no such thing!!!! |

The law says you can't be required to work for more than 6 hours without a half-hour break. If your shift is 6 hours or less, you do not have to have a break. You cannot be made to stay for a break after your shift has finished. |
