In your hiring practices, what decides hiring a person?

do you look at experience, personality and looks, or something which I think is Illegal, checking the candidates credit score? I have been hearing that some employers are checking credit scores

It is very common and not illegal for a company to check your credit as long as you give them your consent. When you apply they will have you sign a consent form that allows them to do this. If you don't want it done you don't have to sign the consent, but then they don't have to hire you either.
The main professions you will see this happen is with any company that deals with a lot of money. This would be places such as Banks or in a Retail business. These companies do not want someone who is having financial trouble with easy access to cash.
In fact what actually may be illegal is hiring someone based on their "looks" depending on exactly how this is interpreted. |

When I was hiring law firm staff and associate attorneys, I looked at a number of factors: experience, ability to work well with others, ability to work well alone (and unmonitored), independence of thought, sense of humor, ability to learn or accept new ideas and instead of "personality" or "looks" I thought about the person in terms of the existing team and would this new-hire work well with the office, firm, work-group or team.
I agree that credit scores may be factored in if the position dealt with large sums of money and where the new-hire would be primarily responsible for the funds with unsupervised access to the money. |

I became a manager at age 19, and whenever I hired people I did look at how they looked, how they presented themselves, how they spoke, their personality,their ability to do the job, and their work history.
I never checked anyone's credit, but I've worked for companies that did and I don't have a problem with it. Do you really want someone working in the collections dept that has outstanding debt in collections? Do you really want your lender to advise you when he or she has poor credit? What is on your credit report does impact your daily life... it shows how much debt you have, how much income you need, whether or not you pay your bills on time, whether or not you're late paying bills... etc All of which can tell a potential employer many things about you and your personality. |
