HI im a law student and i think its a great thing being a lawyer..
i love debating and comming up with arguments and you get to meet all sorts of people..think about it, you will be fighting for justice and putting down crime..plus its one of the highest payed professions in the world..
cons- you dont always get to work with the innocent..specialy during your intern period you are given clients who may in truth be criminals,,but you have to do your best to get them out of trouble..and you feel guilty after that..
this doesnt always happen..when you are a free lawyer you can turn down clients you dont like..

Not sure what law school "Best Answer" attends, but that view is the TV view of law and not at all reflective of reality. Don't buy into it.
There are many kinds of lawyers in many different fields, and the pros and cons vary. Some lawyers work forty hour weeks, some work ninety. Some lawyers make $250,000, some make $50,000. Most cases (in any field) never get to trial, so the TV courtroom dramas are (made up) anomalies. To be a good lawyer you have to be a good reader and writer - debating & arguing skills rarely come into it and overreliance on those skills may actually hurt your professional career. Expect to spend a lot of time reviewing documents, particularly as a new graduate.
The average law grad makes $60,000 and has $100,000 in debt. It's not the path to riches and happiness that the general public seems to think it is. I personally love the intellectual challenge and am very happy with my decisions, even with the economy in the state it's in, but I highly recommend doing your research to see if it is in fact a good choice for you. Your school can probably help set up informational interviews and job shadowing days with a few attorneys in your area. Take advantage of these options and see if you would be happy doing the day-to-day work of a practicing attorney. |
