Is a hand written rent receipt signed by a landlord legal?

The receipts state the date the amount and most of them say rent .

A receipt is a receipt is a receipt, lol...as long as it has their signature, the date rent was paid and the amount paid, it's a receipt in the eyes of the law. My landlord doesn't provide receipts unless they are asked for, so you're lucky to have this. I'm sure they do it for their own protection as well as yours.

Yes, of course. That's what a receipt *is* - it's something that states the date, the amount paid, and has a signature.

Absolutely - it is legal. Most importantly, it is proof to you that they received your rent. If the landlord is willing to do this, that shows good on their part because they are not trying to pull a fast one. Technically, they could scribble on a piece of toilet paper and that is still proof that they received rent. If they write that down. It should definately say the reason for the receipt - like RENT RECEIVED in addition to the date and the landlord's signature though. Otherwise, you just have a piece of paper with the date and the landlord's signature and that doesn't prove that you paid rent. Consider paying by check or money order. That way, you have no worries. If the landlord is worried about the checks clearing, write it a few days before rent is due so that it has time to clear before its due date.

Good luck :)
