Is a master's in paralegal a good career change?

Don't mean to be picky, Steph, but if you desire to go into law, you need to learn better grammar!

A "masters in paralegal" is a DEGREE, not a CAREER. So it doesn't make sense to refer to this as a "career change"!

Perhaps what you meant to say was something like "Will earning a Masters Degree to obtain a position as a paralegal be a good career change"?

It would be much easier to answer THIS question if we had more details. What career are you changing FROM? Why do you want to make this change? Do you live close enough to a city (where most of the jobs are) to justify the daily commute? What's the market for entry-level workers with no legal experience (assuming you have none)? Can you financially afford the steep price of a Master's Degree and keep yourself financially afloat during your studies? Are you an older worker with any dependents? (Both of these would make earning a Masters more difficult - would you miss class if your child was home sick? Don't expect every prof to be sympathetic!)

Sounds like you need to ask yourself tough questions like this and do some more soul-searching before you plunge into this. Just earning a degree doesn't ensure employers will necessarily hire you.

Recommendations:

(1) Read "What Color is Your Parachute"? by Richard Bolles. Outstanding resource & a "must-read" for career changers. Available at any bookstore or slightly older editions for free from your library.

(2) Make appointment w/ the admissions rep at the school that interests you. Obtain more information on the demands & standards expected of its students, job placement resources, financial aid, etc.

(3) Discuss your decision w/ a career counselor. Need to be a little careful here, because some are good, some are bad; some charge and some are free. Perhaps start the process w/ your local Employment Office and go from there.

(4) Do you know someone who already works as a paralegal? If so, meet them for lunch or an after-work coffee for the inside scoop on what this position demands of you. This is perhaps the best resource of all if you can find someone. Start looking.

Hope this helps you make the best decision. Good luck.
