Depends.

I worked for a company that would let you review your file in the presence of someone form the HR dept. They would make copies of anyhting you had signed.... but anything else they would only release if it was subponeaed.

THey are not required to give you a copy of your full file, but you can request copies of signed tax information and anything else that you have signed such as all your pre-employment paperwork. They are not required to give you email, memos or any other document that has been produced by management regarding your performance or any investigation into misconduct.

To simplify, if you signed it, you can request copies of it. Otherwise, no.

No, the personnel file is the property of the company. Unless the employer is a government entity in which case those records are available to be viewed by the employee.

The correct word is no. Anything that happens on company property can, and will, be acted on at their discretion. This includes: telephone calls; emails and even incoming mail, regardless of how it is addressed. It is has always been "SOP" and, in this post 9/11 world, corporate scrutiny is more likely to increase rather than decrease.

Major Issues will be acted on, not filed. You can be sure anything less will be mentioned in your next review. Employers hate to give raises and use the most trivial reason to avoid them.

Many people are exposed to your work ethic every day; so, don't be overly concerned about a superficial file. Unfortunately, nitpickers and busy bodies are part of the corporate fabric. Good Luck.
