Is being a cop a civilian career or goverment?

bluebear949
The way you asked the question is like comparing apples & oranges.

Being a cop is a CIVILIAN career for a GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION.

Being a soldier is a MILITARY career for a GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION.

Being a dr in an army is a MILITARY career for a GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION

Being an independent dr contracted with military is a CIVILIAN career for a GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION.

I hope these examples help.

I think it's a civilian career but funded by the government. if it was government then it would be just as important as the fbi

Despite the militarily influenced structure, this is a civilian position with the government. In fact, unless it includes an induction or commission oath into the military, any other government employment is also civilian and will be afforded protection under the Constitution of the United States. Military personnel, with their oath of allegience, surrender this protection and are subject to the Universal Code of Milititary Justice.

Much of the need for postings like this one is caused by the police themselves. Even though they are civilians too, it is used as a reference by officers for non-police to imply there is a class distinction between themselves and the general public.

While it is not nearly as regimented as the UCMJ, most police departments do have a formal, and somewhat objective, disciplinary review procedure.

Being a cop is a paid government position. Doesn't matter if it city, county, state or federal. Your paycheck comes from a government agency.
