Depends on the age of the child and the type of labor. And the country in which the work is performed.
In the US children can work in certain fields at young ages (under 16) - agriculture for example. But the type of work they can do, the machines they can operate, and the amount of time they can work are restricted.

In most Westernized societies, child labor is strictly regulated.
In many third world countries, it runs rampant.
It is a travesty that children have to work in order to eat.

You need to define child. There are family businesses that can employ a child at young as 13, stipulation being they cannot handle mechanical machines, even a cash register. Local farmers hire 14 yr old to hand pick crops. |
