A friend of mine works in a small clothing shop in a large shopping centre. The owner has cut the hours down and this means that there are girls as young as 18 in the shop on their own sometimes for long periods of time. Is this legal? What is the longest one member of staff can me left on their own?

Yes it is legal. There are thousands of shops who only have one person in them.
At 18 a person is (considered) an adult. |

It may not be safe, but I'm sure it's legal. At 18 she's an adult. I worked alone at 16, but that was a photo finishing booth in a parking lot. |

Perfectly legal in the UK. There are many many small shops where there is only one member of staff. There is no reason for the law to say there should be more than one. I have left one person in charge of my business many times. |

It is legal, I have been left on my own for an entire day! This then stretched on for periods of weeks then months. Sometimes when the shop is quiet it does get boring but as for security if anything happened, all I could do was call the police. |

It is legal for anyone over the age of 1
18, however they need to sign a "lone worker" agreement. Sometimes this is part of the initial employment contract. But otherwise perfectly legal for any amount of time as long as breaks and lunch is taken. |

Sure it's legal.
Your state's wage and hour board controls such things as minimum employee age, maximum number of hours worked, and so on. And, depending on where you're located, it's possible that there are some restrictions. On the other hand, your friend really should be glad she has a job. The alternative would be fewer hours or no job. |
