Is it better to move out? or is it better to stick to it?

I got a job at small law firm. it is really different from other companies becuase I am just working for one attorney. it is more of secretary work where attorney has to tell me something to do for me to work.. if she does not tell me, I dont have other work to do... for the first week. I did lot of copying job for attorney on copy machine and some e- filing. if I think that this job will not get me anywhere, is it better to change job? or is it better to stick to it for a year? see how much I get raised? lets say attorney does not want to pay much later for her assistant later? will she fire me? or will she raise me and keep on using me? any experiences with job?

Usually attorneys do not resort to fire their staff, and hence your job is secure. But then, working in a law firm will provide you better skill and experience, than working under a single attorney !

It really depends on the attorney. You'll get a lot of experience as a legal assistant, because you'll be doing everything. You'll know how to file papers with the court, organize case files, calendar, and generally know how a law office works.

I'm sure that there is plenty of work to do. You may have to be proactive in seeking it out, but there's always a lot of work in small firms.

As for advancement and pay increases, it depends upon the attorney and your performance. The attorney may only be willing to pay entry level wages, in which case I would stay about 6 months then move on to someplace else. But if the attorney values your work and wants you to stay, it's likely she will give you a pay increase.

Honestly, you're probably not going to get rich working for "the little guy" and this goes for any company, but it has been my experience that they tend to treat their employees better and you don't get lost in the shuffle. give it a little time and stay in the good graces of your employer, and i'm sure your boss won't stop you from bettering yourself.

You need to ask for a job title list. l have had a job like this before and it becomes a dead end job. If they have to reduce staff you will be the first person to go. Ask her for more work and if she doesn't give you any l would look for another job that is more rewarding, don't leave until you finds something else.
